This unit helps language teachers to develop a strong understanding of the language systems (i.e., phonology, grammar and lexis), and their application to language teaching and learning, hence, the fact that such systems operate within a context. Language teachers are aware of the influence context and situation exert on the ways language is used. Therefore, they need to develop ways of presenting the sounds, words and grammar that make up these language systems in meaningful contexts using a range of methodologies and teaching materials.

This exiting unit provides you with an opportunity to deepen your knowledge of second language acquisition and English language teaching. The focus is on different mental processes involved in and major theories of second language learning. Students also study various factors that affect second language acquisition. The unit also acts as preparation for your dissertation research.

This unit provides the background knowledge and skills needed for students to design a small-scale research project; to analyse different types of data; and write-up the findings. It refers particularly to issues surrounding data collection within the fields of applied linguistics and language teaching.

In this unit, students learn how to develop materials for language teaching. The unit is very helpful for language teachers as they will learn different frameworks for developing materials for teaching different skills such as speaking, listening, reading, and writing as well as materials for teaching vocabulary.

This unit aims to teach students how to develop high quality assessments and tests in the field of applied linguistics and English language teaching. The important qualities of effective assessment and accreditation methods will be covered in the unit.

This unit aims to help students become familiar with various methods of language teaching. The unit covers various methods of language teaching from a historical perspective and touches upon discussions related to post-method approaches in language teaching.

The Professional Practices unit provides an excellent opportunity for personal and professional development as it allows students to explore the practical issues relevant to their field of study. It provides practical experience with which to create a project to explore the wider issues of a subject area of students’ choice. Students may also use this experience as a starting point for their final dissertation.

A vital aim of a master’s degree is to enable students to successfully carry out a major piece of research by using their knowledge and skills independently. The dissertation provides students with the opportunity to do this and represents the culmination of their studies. The main task will be to carry out a significant piece of original research related to your area of study and interests in reference to Applied Linguistics, Language Teaching and Learning.
