General Foundation Programme

Mission of the Foundation Programme

The mission of the General Foundation Programme is to provide an educationally dynamic and supportive environment to enable students to attain the English language, IT, Maths and study skills required to successfully engage in undergraduate studies. In addition, we seek to instil in students a sense of collaboration, integrity, community responsibility and commitment to achieving their full potential.

 Programme overview

The General Foundation Programme is a one-year preparatory programme over two semesters. Students are required to pass Semester One modules before proceeding to Semester Two.

Programme Objectives:

The General Foundation Programme is a bridging programme for school leavers to proceed to Diploma- or Degree-level study which is conducted in English. It equips students with the necessary study and academic skills required at the undergraduate level.

 Awards: (students must register for a particular award in order to qualify for that award)

  • Foundation Certificate
  • Mode of delivery: Full time and Part time

 Programme Structure

Students must satisfactorily complete 10 modules to be eligible for the award of the Foundation Certificate.

Please note that programme structures may be subject to change and modules may be offered in any of the semesters in an academic year.

BA (Honours) in English Language

Programme overview

This degree in English Language focuses on developing highly employable bilingual professionals with marketable skills. The programme ensures a rigorous intellectual education, and equipping graduates with skills of critical analysis and intercultural communication. Professions that require expertise in English Language include, but are not restricted to Journalism/Media, Communications, Teaching, Translation, Publishing, Human Resources and Public Relations.

Programme Objectives:

The general goals of the BA (Hons) English Language have been to produce graduates with excellent communication skills who are able to describe, appreciate and analyse language in the great variety of forms in which it occurs – spoken and written, formal and informal, in different contexts, genres and by different speakers. This involves the development of language proficiency to a high standard along with expertise in communication and linguistics.

  • Diploma in Higher Education (DipHE)
  • BA (Hons)

 Mode of delivery: Full time

 Programme Structure

Students are required to pass 8 modules totalling 120 credits in each year (level). In the final year, students must complete a project (dissertation), which accounts for 30 credits (equivalent to a double module). In total students complete 420 credits (28 modules) with a combination of core and specialisation modules to be eligible for the award of the BA (Hons).
